Bedford Press Release
As a company committed to the future of the towns and communities in which we work, Lenwell were delighted with the discovery of a glimpse of Bedford’s past when a beautifully preserved receipt book was found in the attic following work on the renovation of our High Street Bedford premises.
The Receipt Pad dates back to 1890’s and belonged to James Watson, a renowned Wine Merchant in Bedford.
Kate Boittier, Lenwell Bedford’s Lettings Manager, described herself as genuinely excited by the find and immediately got in touch with The Bedford Museum.
The Receipt Pad was donated to the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum, Castle Lane Bedford and now forms part of their ‘Clocking In Exhibition’ which will run until Sunday 23rd May 2010. The exhibition charts the working lives of the people of Bedford Borough from market trading to brick making to cutting-edge aerospace research. Using interviews with local people and the Art Gallery and
Museum’s collections, this exhibition explores the range of, and changes in, the working days of local people.
The Receipt Pad is to be found next to a Stoneware flagon belonging to the same wine merchant!
